Thirteen Clubs Unite to BEAT Out Leptospirosis

Striving for a healthy community is the ultimate investment of Rotaract Clubs to keep in moving forward towards sustainable projects that promote public health. The question is, does your purpose and goal meet your eagerness to continue promoting health, preventing diseases and prolonging life? The Rotaract Club of Quezon City Central, together with twelve co-host clubs, strengthened each linkages to beat out leptospirosis that affects thousands of lives leading to increase cases of mortality and morbidity during rainy season.

The health promotion and educational seminar entitled, SIBOL 2021: Seminar on Initiatives to Beat Out Leptospirosis was successfully implemented to form twelve in one purpose to combat leptospirosis. Rotaract Clubs from various districts namely: Rotaract Club of Bagong Silangan, Balingasa, Batangas, Calumpit, Cavite State University Rosario, Greenfields QC, Mega Edsa, Metro Zamboanga, Midtown QC, Santa Maria, Tacloban and Uptown Cubao gathered as one for this initiative. 

Dr. Sharon Yvette Angelina Villanueva emphasizes that humans are widely affected by Leptospirosis. She presented common signs and symptoms of a human suffering from the disease.

The seminar took place on August 15,2021 via Zoom and FB Live platform. Dra Sharon Yvette Angeline M. Villanueva of the Department of Medical Microbiology, College of Public Health, University of the Philippines Manila delivered an interactive presentation titled “Let’s Talk about Leptospirosis”.

Dr. Yvette Villanueva shows a video clip on how Leptospira spp. are motile and what it looks like under a microscope. 

The successful event drew almost 80 participants composed of Rotaractors, Rotarians, Interactors and guests from other agencies. Background, Modes of Transmission, Clinical Manifestation, Diagnosis, Treatment, Prevention and Control Strategies for Leptospirosis were among the points discussed as leptospirosis is considered as one of the most important emerging public health problems not only in the Philippines, but worldwide.

Dr. Sharon Yvette Villanueva presents epidemiological data of Leptospirosis as a part of the global burden of diseases.

The overall vision of this project emphasize that humans can be protected from infection and disease by increasing awareness regarding leptospirosis among the public, especially those involved in high-risk activities. The public can protect themselves from infection by taking necessary measures and recognizing the disease at early stage to get treatment. Proper knowledge, attitude and practices is a must towards Leptospirosis that would eventually lead to be controlled if not zero morbidity and mortality rate caused by the disease.
