A meaningful act of solidarity unfolded at Baguio City Hall as key organizations and community partners came together to implement Project: Ani Para sa Bayan, a rescue-buy initiative aimed at supporting both local farmers in Benguet and public utility jeepney (PUJ) drivers in the city.

The initiative, led by the Philippine College of Occupational Medicine – Baguio-Benguet Chapter, represented by RAC Baguio Angels Drs. Karla and Brenda Villanueva, in collaboration with the Consortium of Signed Farmer Associations and Responsible Markets and other local partners, successfully addressed the dual challenges of agricultural surplus and economic hardship among transport workers.

In the midst of the global oil crisis, our Guisad jeepney drivers remain on the road. Through our B.M.W. (Basic Meds on Wheels) initiative, Dr. Brenda and Dr. Karla ensure that driver health is never compromised. By providing hygiene packs and essential vitamins, the Baguio Angels are driving the mission of disease prevention right to the terminal.

At the heart of the project was the procurement and redistribution of 550 kilograms of fresh vegetables directly sourced from Benguet farmers. These goods, which might otherwise have gone unsold, were purchased and distributed to 371 PUJ drivers from various associations, including those from Trancoville, Aurora Hill, Dominican Mirador, and Upper Quezon Hill. The effort not only provided immediate financial relief to farmers but also delivered much-needed food assistance to drivers navigating ongoing economic pressures.

Beyond food security, the initiative also emphasized health and well-being. A total of 50 hygiene kits were distributed during the event, reinforcing the importance of personal care and preventive health practices among beneficiaries.

The Philippine College of Occupational Medicine (PCOM), represented by Drs. Karla and Brenda, bridges the gap between Benguet farmers and Dominican drivers. This “Rescue Buy” initiative serves a dual purpose: securing the livelihood of our farmers and ensuring our drivers have access to the L.E.X.U.S. standard of nutrition.

The success of Ani Para sa Bayan was made possible through the collective efforts of dedicated partners. COSFARM played a crucial role in organizing and facilitating the vegetable rescue operation, ensuring that produce reached those in need efficiently. Meanwhile, the Rotaract Club of Baguio Angels also extended its generosity by donating hygiene kits, while Harvest and Hope Social Enterprise continued to champion sustainable and community-driven initiatives.

More than just a relief operation, Ani Para sa Bayan stands as a testament to what can be achieved through collaboration, compassion, and a shared commitment to uplifting local communities. As challenges persist, initiatives like this highlight the power of unity in creating meaningful and lasting impact.
