Mandaluyong City, Philippines — A community-based health education initiative led by the Rotaract Club of Lucena South, together with medical students from the University of Santo Tomas and the Rotaract Club of Makati United, successfully improved HIV awareness and health literacy among residents of Barangay Barangka Ilaya.

Held on November 22, 2025, at the Ilaya Amphitheater, the program titled “Thrive with Pride: Empowerment Through Health Literacy” gathered 30 participants, primarily from the LGBTQIA+ community. The seminar addressed key topics such as HIV prevention, patient rights, and access to inclusive healthcare services.

The initiative was organized in response to persistent gaps in HIV awareness and stigma within the community, despite over 1,000 recorded HIV cases in Mandaluyong City since 1984. Participants were introduced to essential concepts, including confidentiality in healthcare, informed consent, and preventive measures such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).

Results from pre- and post-test assessments showed a significant improvement in participants’ knowledge. Average scores increased from 50% before the seminar to 80% after, reflecting a 30-percentage-point gain and exceeding the project’s target.

The program also included interactive discussions, an open forum, and the distribution of educational materials to support continued learning beyond the event. Participants expressed increased confidence in seeking healthcare services and a willingness to share information within their communities.
The initiative was supported by the Sangguniang Kabataan of Barangay Barangka Ilaya, local health workers, and LGBTQIA+ advocacy groups, strengthening collaboration for inclusive community health programs.
