Success of Project: Empowering Skills of Hope: Learning Skills Through Agriculture

On February 11, a Memorandum of Agreement was signed between the Rotaract Club of Cebu Fuente – University of San Carlos and the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary – Cebu Mission, formally launching the project Empowering Skills of Hope: Learning Skills Through Agriculture. Led by Gamechanger President Yoanna Aliñabon and Project Head Ella Ricarte, the initiative aimed to equip beneficiaries with practical agricultural skills while fostering a meaningful space for learning and connection. The project was later carried out on March 20 in Basak San Nicolas, Cebu City, in collaboration with volunteers and partner facilitators.

For Ella, the experience was not defined by large milestones, but by a simple yet powerful moment during the seed-planting activity. As each beneficiary carefully planted seeds into their pots, what stood out was not just participation, but genuine enthusiasm and presence. It reshaped her understanding of collaboration—proving that impact does not always come from grand actions, but from shared and intentional efforts.

Behind the scenes, however, the journey was far from easy. Balancing the demands of midterms while coordinating logistics and communication required constant adjustment. Yet, what sustained her was the purpose behind the project and the support of her co-project heads, turning pressure into perseverance.

More than teaching gardening, the initiative became a space for mutual growth. Initially uncertain about working with SPED beneficiaries, Ella found her doubts slowly replaced with confidence and clarity. She realized that purpose in service goes beyond simply helping—it is about recognizing how others experience the world and creating environments where they feel valued.

In the end, the project planted a kind of hope that was quiet yet lasting: one rooted in courage, patience, and the willingness to step into the unfamiliar. It served as a reminder that when intention meets action, even the smallest efforts can grow into something deeply meaningful.
