From the start, Ralph Bernardo was not just a member— he was a leader in the making.
When the Rotaract Club of Metro San Miguel was newly founded way back in 2019, Ralph Bernardo didn’t start as just another member; he was thrust into the role of Charter President. It was a position that came with both honor and hesitation. Initially, Ralph’s perception of Rotary as an organization reserved for those with deep pockets left him uncertain about accepting the role. However, driven by a passion for leadership and a commitment to making a difference, Ralph embraced the challenge.
“Ako raw ‘yung second option, but I was the right choice,” said Bernardo.
Though he wasn’t the initial choice for leadership, DRR Ralph Bernardo quickly proved to be the right one. When he stepped into the role of Charter President, he began by gathering a core group of charter members, drawing from his closest friends and trusted colleagues. Over his two-year tenure, Ralph dedicated himself to strengthening the club’s foundation.
He understood that a successful club is built on more than just meetings and activities—it thrives on strong internal relationships. To foster this, Ralph organized numerous fellowship events and RAC101 sessions, bringing members closer together and creating a tight-knit community.
“Kasi if watak-watak kami, if hindi ganoon kaganda ‘yung relationship namin sa bawat isa, hindi matutuloy ‘yung club kasi tatamarin kang umattend ng meeting at activities kasi ‘di mo naman kilala ‘yung mga kasama mo,” Ralph added, stressing the importance of internal relationships within clubs.
Through innovative strategies and relentless dedication to his mission, Ralph didn’t just lead—he laid the foundation of the club. His journey from doubt to decisive leadership transformed the Rotaract Club of Metro San Miguel into a thriving community, firmly rooted in the values of service and fellowship. Today, the club stands as a testament to his vision, proving that true leadership is not about where you start, but about the impact you create.
Rising to the Challenge: Leading Through Crisis
Ralph’s leadership was tested in unprecedented ways when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. As the world grappled with uncertainty and fear, Ralph remained steadfast in his mission to serve. He led the club in organizing community outreach initiatives, ensuring that those most affected by the pandemic received the help they needed. Despite the challenges, Ralph spearheaded relief operations that provided at least 300 packs of essential goods divided in 3 waves to families in San Miguel, Bulacan struggling to make ends meet.
“Pati ‘yung mga frontliners, nagbigay kami ng pagkain doon sa mga local district hospitals namin. And sa mga barangay tanod na nakabantay sa mga checkpoints namimigay kami ng meryenda,” Ralph added.
But the true measure of his leadership came during Typhoon Ulysses, a devastating storm that wreaked havoc across the region. Balancing the responsibilities of leading his club and caring for his own family, Ralph faced an overwhelming task. Yet, he didn’t waver. With a sense of duty that extended beyond personal concerns, his club managed to raise ₱110,000, producing over 1000 relief packs that were distributed among the 3 different barangays, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to helping others, even in the face of personal adversity.
“Na-balanse ‘yung apektado ka rin, at the same time fulfill your responsibilities to give and provide. Though we have a duty to ourselves, we also have that greater duty to our community,” said Ralph.
A Legacy of Leadership
Ralph Bernardo’s journey as the Charter President of the Rotaract Club of Metro San Miguel to now a District Rotaract Representative of District 3770 is a testament to the power of leadership born from determination and a genuine desire to serve. From fostering strong internal bonds within the club to leading critical community outreach efforts during a global pandemic and a devastating typhoon, Ralph has left an indelible mark on his community.
“By simply wanting to join Rotaract means you want to help other people and if you want to help other people, you’re already a leader,” he added.
Though he wasn’t the first choice, Ralph’s legacy as a leader is undeniable. He proved that the right choice isn’t always about being the first pick—it’s about stepping up when it matters the most, leading with compassion and making a lasting impact on those you serve.
Like a backup parachute, he may not have been the first pick, but when needed, he was the one who saved the day.
