Service, More Than Just Merit

In the academic year 2021-2022, I joined the Rotaract Club of Cebu Fuente – University of San Carlos as an aspirant. I was still relatively fresh to the world of student organizations and frankly, I was searching for clubs to join last year for academic merit, but when I came across RACCF-USC and learned about its mission, purpose, and goals, I felt attached to the club. I love to participate in community service activities and dedicate myself to helping the needy. Upon hearing that Rotaract had opportunities to give back to the community, I knew I had to join.

Unfortunately, I was only able to engage with the club virtually in the prior year; thus, I missed out on participating in the club’s volunteer efforts. As I will be inducted as a member of RACCF-USC, I am more driven than ever to take an active part in the club’s activities.

“Service above self” is the only way the world will be able to get rid of all the difficulties facing us today. The concept of living one’s life for oneself has become warped. Moreover, the work that a person does has an impact on the lives of those both inside and outside of his immediate environment. For as Mahatma Gandhi so wisely put it, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” When you put the needs of others ahead of your own, regardless of your age, position, career, or status, you will always be “someone” in the eyes of those you help. When you contribute to the communities around you with those humble ideas, you will positively impact the world.

There are many people, both men, and women, who devote their whole lives to improving the lives of others who are unable to achieve the same for themselves because they are unable to live for others. Although not attaining recognition is not one of their priorities, it does happen to some of them.

They care simply about seeing happy expressions on the faces of the people they assist. They are alworking toward the same aim, which is to assist other people, regardless of whether they are animal rights advocates, humanitarians, or environmentalists. We, the next generation, have a responsibility to continue in their footsteps and seek out novel approaches to assisting in the effort to make our planet a more hospitable place to live. To make the world a home for every person who lives in it, every one of us must do what we can to contribute to making that dream a reality.

With this, I have appreciated the Rotary Family as they have joined forces to make an optimist and lasting difference in the world and to serve and magnify the modest service ethos that has guided each of them so far.
