The Philippines, being the highest in prevalence of breast cancer in Asia and ranked 9th highest in the world as of 2021, continues to strengthen its campaign against the said disease. Breast Cancer Awareness Month headed by the Department of Health (DOH) is commemorated annually to raise awareness about the impact of breast cancer.

The Rotaractors visited Alamada Public Market and distributed the beauty kits for the vendors.

Mirror. Salamin. Sámin. Espeho. Pagalungan.

No matter what vernacular we use, this project aims for one greater purpose. As a support to the breast cancer movement, the Rotaract Club of Alamada kickstarted 2022 with their Project Salamin, which was successfully implemented last February 1.  They have chosen the market vendors to remind them that self-confidence is the best outfit that would radiate a positive outlook towards their customers.

“Para Sa ano ni? May amo lagi sini?” Some people may have not known that the Rotaract club exists in our municipality. By doing such community-extension programs, we were able to connect with other people. And this is one of the key areas that we want to focus on– to engage with the community and expand our reach.
The main goal of Project salamin is to create an impact on disease prevention. Some people are not receptive/attentive about the purpose of the program. But rejection is normal. It is our duty to help people understand our cause, educate them, and empower them.

Through donation drives, the club was able to collect and distribute beauty kits, especially the mirrors that will be used to do the breast self-examination (BSE). The club also provided flyers that contains BSE tips to help them in performing BSE monthly. The club envisions that other clubs/organizations will also emulate this simple gesture because self-checking gives a greater chance of early detection of having breast cancer.  Detection through self-examination promotes seeking assistance for prompt intervention, leading to effective treatment and a favorable prognosis.

Seeing the smiles of our beneficiaries is priceless. Our efforts in Rotaract are not being paid monetarily but serving above ourselves voluntarily ignites our passion in pursuing our mission to serve and change lives.

Project Salamin aims to strengthen the beauty amidst diversity, reduce the risk of having breast cancer, and above all, remind people that the Rotaract Club of Alamada exists and they exist for service.
