Bangon, Sugbo: One Last Wave, One Shared Christmas

A few days before Christmas, Barangay Lusaran did not look like the season it once knew. The winds of Typhoon Tino had already passed, yet their traces remained—on patched rooftops, on drying clothes hung carefully under weak sunlight, and on the quiet worry etched across the faces of parents still trying to rebuild. For many families, the thought of celebration felt distant. Survival came first. Christmas could wait.

But on December 21, hope arrived—not loudly, not grandly—but in waves of compassion.

Outpouring support from the manpower.

Inside the modest barangay chapel, something extraordinary unfolded through the initiative “Bangon, Sugbo: One Last Wave, One Shared Christmas.” Led by the Rotaract Club of Cebu Fuente together with the Rotaract Club of Cebu Fuente – USC and the Rotaract Club of Cebu Fuente – UV Chapter, in strong collaboration with the Rotary Club of Cebu Fuente, the gathering became more than a relief operation. It became a shared moment of humanity.

Volunteers arrived carrying carefully prepared relief goods—each pack thoughtfully assembled to bring comfort during the holiday season. Yet what they truly carried was presence. They carried the assurance that the community had not been forgotten—that even after the storm, someone would still show up.

Families began filling the chapel, children holding tightly to their parents. There was fatigue in the room, yes—but also resilience. As relief goods were distributed to 450 families, expressions slowly softened. For 150 children, the day felt like Christmas returning to them. Laughter echoed against chapel walls that had earlier sheltered uncertainty. Smiles, once hesitant, became genuine.

The crowd who mourned was heard by the team.

The initiative was made possible through the dedication of young leaders who believed that service does not end when disaster fades from headlines. Gabrielle Ella Agpawa of the Rotaract Club of Cebu Fuente, together with Yoanna Aliñabon of the USC Chapter and Jean Viola of the UV Chapter, mobilized Rotarians, Rotaractors, and volunteers who gave not just their time, but their hearts. Their leadership was evident not only in the smooth coordination of the program, but also in the warmth felt by every family served.

Strong partnership with the Lusaran Barangay Council ensured that the outreach was organized and inclusive, reflecting true bayanihan. Support from MARBA Realty and Development and the PhilRES Mandaue Chapter further strengthened the initiative, demonstrating how collaboration between civic organizations and the private sector can create meaningful and lasting impact. When different sectors unite for one purpose, compassion multiplies.

As the year approached its end, Bangon, Sugbo stood as more than a final outreach activity. It became a quiet but powerful statement—that service continues beyond emergency response, that compassion does not expire, and that Christmas is not defined by abundance, but by togetherness.

In Lusaran, the storm may have shaken homes, but it did not shake hope. On that December afternoon, inside a humble chapel filled with shared laughter and gratitude, the community reclaimed its season. It was not just one last wave of service. It was a shared Christmas—proof that when Sugbo rises, it rises together.
