Unite for Cebu: RACCF-USC’s Earthquake Response

By Juliana Marie Mabugat | Posted on December 27, 2025

Last September 30, 2025, a devastating 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck Bogo, Cebu, claiming lives and displacing thousands—many of whom continue to live in tent cities today. Cradled within the Pacific Ring of Fire, the Philippines is no stranger to earthquakes and aftershocks, but the scale of this disaster demanded urgent and compassionate action. In true Filipino bayanihan spirit, and guided by Rotaract’s motto of “Service Above Self,” the Rotaract Club of Cebu Fuente – University of San Carlos (RACCF-USC) immediately mobilized its earthquake response initiative.

Day 1 of the Donation Drive.

In full alignment with this year’s Rotary theme, “Unite for Good,” club officers and members gathered the very next morning. They headed straight to the nearest grocery stores to purchase relief items, jumpstarting the first wave of assistance. After delivering the donations to the provincial capitol, the Rotaractors pushed forward—funds began pouring in, and partnerships emerged, strengthening the mission to help those most affected.

The first two weeks of October became a testament to heartfelt solidarity. Members spent their free time packing goods within the school premises, while others identified remote and underserved areas as target beneficiaries. As a Rotaractor of four years, I felt immense pride serving alongside them. The initiative reminded me of why I joined—to serve, to uplift, and to change lives.

Day 2 of the Donation Drive.

This project began as the idea of three Unite Officers. Rtr. Isabela Basquez shared their motivation: “It felt insensitive to just go on with life, and I was privileged to give back.”

What started as a simple conversation transformed into a powerful ripple effect. The club raised ₱67,000, completed four rounds of relief drives, engaged over 30 Rotaractors, and reached more than five communities in need.

But this response also highlighted a sobering truth: resilience should not depend solely on civilians.

Day 3 of the Donation Drive.

Disaster risk management must be strengthened across all levels of government, ensuring systems reach even the smallest barangays. Filipinos deserve better—sustainable, long-term solutions that protect and empower communities.

Yet, despite systemic challenges, one thing remains constant: when calamity strikes, we unite for good. Through compassion, collaboration, and unwavering hope, we rise together.
