Accessible opportunities and livelihoods are becoming harder for some communities that are considered remote or pressing areas. One of these communities is the adopted community of RAC Manila Metro, the BASECO Community located in Brgy. 649 Port Area, Manila City As the club conducted a community assessment, they found out that there is an increasing number of families and individuals that are under poverty thresholds, as a ratio of two out of three in this community are under this, which means they have below PHP 12,000 in salary or income per month. This is the cause of the club flagship project initiative, “CommUnidad Project.”
CommUnidad aims to provide a sustainable livelihood for families living within the vicinity of the garden that fall under the poverty threshold and to eventually decrease their number by 20% in 3 years. The project seeks to create a replicable solution to address this challenge. Thus, three communities were initially selected to test our proposed solution. The team seeks to expand to more communities in the Philippines and eventually turn global.
As we increase communities adopting the solution and becoming successful in the goal of poverty alleviation, we also envision sustainable communities to be able to help other less developed communities in the future. Currently, the project has 250 mother volunteers in the area for this community urban garden in partnership with Bless the Children Foundation. The project was spearheaded by Rtr. Patrick Salon with the support of the Rotaract Club of Manila Metro and collaborators such as partner companies and organizations.
