The Rotaract Club of San Francisco Del Monte Malaya Achievers (RAC SFDM MA), in partnership with Jeremake, distributed 100 sets of keychain microscopes called Makeroscopes to Science teachers and students of Eulogio Rodriguez Jr. High School, Quezon City last September 29, 2022.

The Makeroscope, is a single lens keychain microscope attached to a smart phone’s front camera enabling up to x265 zoom of microscopic samples. The Makeroscope was invented by Filipino engineer and member of their sponsor Rotary Club of San Francisco Del Monte, Jeremy De Leon, the person behind Jeremake.

The RAC SFDM MA conceived the project with Jeremake to address the problem of Philippine public schools where they lack microscopes to support hands-on scientific learning of its student population. Due also to the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic, face-to-face classes are still limited affecting the ability of students to access school laboratories.

Each of the 100 sets received by Eulogio Rodriguez Jr. High School contains the keychain microscope, sample glass slides of allium cepa, plant root tip, and oral epithelial cell specimens as well as sample polyvinyl chloride plastic slides of onion epidermis and sunflower root specimens to enable immediate utilization in class. Each set also contains blank university grade glass slides so students can get any sample from the environment for microscopic investigation.

Eulogio Rodriguez Jr. High School is an adopted public school of the sponsor club of RAC SFDM MA, the Rotary Club of San Francisco del Monte. The Makeroscope project was also implemented in partnership with the Interact Club of Eulogio Rodriguez Jr. High School which shall help monitor the utilization of the Makeroscopes and report indicators of outcome and impact to academic performance of students.

The funding for the purchase and distribution of Makeroscopes came from the grant obtained by RAC SFDM MA after winning the Rotary Club of Manila Magic and San Pedro Magic’s Edison Ong National Search for Outstanding Community Service Project Proposals 2022. The RAC SFDM MA is open to partnering with other Rotary and Rotaract clubs to help distribute more Makeroscopes to public schools nationwide.
