Due to the alarming increase in fire incidents around the country during this time, the month of March was designated as Fire Prevention Month by Presidential Proclamation No. 115-A.
When the march begins, there are numerous fire prevention parades and fire safety awareness seminars to educate our citizens to be cautious when using and avoiding fire. On March 26, 2022, RAC Raha, in collaboration with the Raha Volunteers Fire Department, conducted a Fire Safety Tips for Kids program at St. Paul Grade School in Tondo, Manila. Many children went, accompanied by their older brothers or sisters and parents.
As a result of electrical malfunctions or unattended candles, there are multiple fire alarms in Tondo’s residential areas. Since the houses in Tondo were so close together and made of light materials, the flames spread quickly and grew. That is why, when there is a fire, call the nearest Fire Department as quickly as possible because every second matters. The number of high alarms or the occurrence of fire is also reduced as a result of the fire basic education that is being provided in the community.
LCP Gerard Cariño, a volunteer firefighter-medic with RAHA Volunteers Fire Department, teaches kids the do’s and don’ts when a fire occurs in their neighborhood or houses to react safely, decreasing the risk of injury or death in the event of a conflagration. When one of the firefighters was already wearing the bunker, the kids were amazed and encouraged to become firefighters when they grew up. They will become heroes when the time comes to save lives and property.
