Rotaract Club of De La Salle University mounts event to promote sustainability

Ever since the start of the pandemic, people have been drawn to various e-shopping platforms like Shopee and Lazada. Promising convenience to their consumers, these companies heavily rely on disposable plastic packages ranging from bubble wrappers to plastic packets. Due to their disposability, these materials are rarely recycled nor put to better use. In fact, according to Vetter (2020), Amazon alone has generated over 400 million pounds of plastic waste in 2019. As the mass’ inclination towards online retail grows, these numbers are expected to rise. With these in mind, the event’s project heads became motivated to conduct a webinar on sustainability, its importance, and relevance in the Lasallian community.

Last August 27, 2021, the Rotaract Club of De La Salle University under Rotaract District 3810 held an event entitled “RAColor: Going Green With Sustainable Living” via Zoom. Ms. Alaina Tria was invited to be the guest and sole speaker of the said event. Ms. Tria is the co-founder of a local brand called Terra PH. She also garnered several awards such as Champion for Corporate Social Responsibility and Company of the Year in the Junior Achievement Philippines.

Our speaker shares how her simple advocacy of taking care of the environment has resulted in their award business Terra Philippines. A brand that is not only employing local women, sourcing local supplies, but also reduces coconut husk waste from local buko vendors.

Ms. Alaina Tria introduced the different types of advocacies but expounded more on her advocacy. Her talk was truly inspiring as she discussed how living sustainably can deeply impact the environment. With her sincere devotion to living sustainably, she was able to contribute both to the coconut and fashion industry through her brand Terra PH.

This successful event realized the vision of the Rotaract Club of DLSU, as well as other Rotaract Clubs to raise awareness on the growing issue of our environment.

A quick photo op with the participants, speaker, and the guests!

With a united stance, we hold the power to instill change in our society. Even so, we could create a world where young minds are free to grow and thrive.
