Turning Pages, Shaping Futures: Rotaract Club of Tacloban launches Project K-wento!

The spirit of volunteerism, camaraderie, and uplifting one another’s lives came together through an inspiring initiative held on September 19, 2025, at Bliss Elementary School, Brgy. 74 Nula-Tula, Tacloban City. Project K-wento demonstrated that by nurturing children and teaching them to read, they not only develop knowledge but also gain essential life skills—critical thinking, decision-making, confidence-building, and the ability to contribute to a thriving community. This impact extends beyond the classroom, reaching throughout District 3860 and into the broader community.

Guided Tutorial Sessions Are at the Heart of Project K-wento’s Activities

As a new member of the club, it fills me with pride and joy to witness the children’s genuine smiles and sense of unity throughout the project. The program was not merely an avenue to identify good readers but also a way to uncover other potentials such as leadership, communication, creativity, critical thinking, and socio-emotional development.

The project also gave us the opportunity to embody the true spirit of a Rotarian—guided by the core values of Rotary and Rotaract. It cultivated in us a deep sense of belonging and responsibility, inspiring us to be catalysts of change and to carry the torch of hope throughout our Rotaract journey.

Rotaractors Brought Stories to Life, Keeping Grade 5 Learners Curious, Inspired, and Full of Imagination

Moreover, serving as co-chair of this project is an honor I will always treasure. The students were not the only ones who learned; we, the facilitators, gained equally from them—the power of dreaming. As they read wholeheartedly, they brought each story to life, filling the room with color and meaning. Their voices, full of innocence and emotion, revealed a strength rooted in their freedom from worrying about the future.

This project was made even more successful and impactful through the support of the Department of Education Tacloban City Division, Bliss Elementary School, and several partner clubs: Rotaract Club of Kathmandu West, Rotaract Club of SPSPS San Juanico, Rotaract Club of Colombo Uptown, Rotaract Club of Changebringers, Rotaract Club of Manila Zobel, Rotaract Club of Kandaya-Tacloban, Rotaract Club of Holy Spirit, and Rotaract Club of Sta. Mesa. Together through this literacy and youth development project, we are turning children’s dreams one step closer to reality.

Learning Became More Exciting with a Guided Storytelling Session

Indeed, we have ignited in them the courage to dream and the determination to transform those dreams into reality. We have instilled an understanding of the crucial role reading plays in shaping their minds and their future. Through this program, we aspire to create positive change in the lives of the most vulnerable in our communities—helping turn the dreams of children into tangible realities.
