A vibrant two-day celebration of environmental stewardship and youth leadership took center stage in Barangay Makilas, Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay, last June 7–8, 2025, as the community hosted a Youth Eco-Summit in collaboration with the SK Council of Makilas, Rotaract Club of Ipil Sibugay, and medical students from Ateneo de Zamboanga University. The event brought together young people, local leaders, and advocates to raise awareness and inspire action toward a more sustainable future.

The summit featured a series of interactive and educational activities designed to engage participants in meaningful environmental action. One of the highlights was the tree-planting activity, where youth volunteers planted seedlings in designated areas, symbolizing their commitment to restoring and protecting nature. The hands-on experience not only promoted reforestation but also instilled a sense of responsibility among participants.

A key segment of the program focused on the impact of poor waste management on climate change and public health. Medical students led an informative talk explaining how improper waste disposal contributes to environmental degradation and increases the risk of community transmission of diseases. They emphasized the importance of proper segregation, sanitation, and responsible waste practices in safeguarding both the environment and human health.
Participants also took part in a “Composting 101” workshop, where they learned simple and practical ways to turn biodegradable waste into nutrient-rich compost. This activity highlighted how small, everyday actions can significantly reduce waste and contribute to sustainable living.

The summit concluded with a community clean-up drive, where volunteers worked together to collect and properly dispose of waste in public areas. The initiative reinforced the importance of collective action in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

To recognize the efforts and enthusiasm of participants, an awarding ceremony was held, celebrating outstanding contributions in various activities. The event not only fostered environmental awareness but also strengthened community bonds and youth empowerment.
Overall, the Youth Eco-Summit in Barangay Makilas served as a powerful reminder that when young people are equipped with knowledge and opportunities, they can lead meaningful change toward a greener and healthier future.
